Press Briefing

On November 21, 2018, a press briefing by the National Human Rights Centre of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the International Press Club on the Asian Forum on Human Rights was held at the NTRK Media Center building.
Speakers at the press briefing were:

Director of the National Human Rights Centre of the Republic of Uzbekistan - Akmal Saidov, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva - Michael Møller, Regional Representative in Central Asia of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights - Ryzsard Komenda, Head of Democratization Department, OSCE/ODIHR - Marcin Walecki, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for the Republic of Uzbekistan - Helena Fraser.

The main reason for the press briefing at the IPC platform was the Asian Forum on Human Rights to be held in 22-23 November of 2018 on the theme: “The outcomes of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Challenges of time and reality” in the city of Samarkand. The initiative to create the Asian Forum belongs to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

The objective of the Asian Forum is to examine the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Central Asia and other Asian countries for the development of the region along the path outlined in Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development Goals.
The Asian Forum on Human Rights is the first international platform in Central Asia, which is focused on discussing vital issues and problems in the field of human rights in the region.

In the press briefing, the speakers discussed the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international legal and political obligations in the field of human rights for the participating countries. Furthermore, specific mechanisms, tools and approaches used by various government agencies and institutions to ensure the protection, respect and observance of human rights were observed. During the debates, important issues and existing human rights problems in the region and in particular in the country were raised and ways to address these issues were discussed in length.

In the press briefing, the speakers were asked questions from the national media, including the active interest of foreign media on the above-mentioned topics.
